TXvsUS: Affordable Health Care and Medicaid Threatened

TXvsUS: Affordable Health Care and Medicaid Threatened

Background: Beginning on July 9th, the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans will hear oral arguments on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act(ACA). The hearing follows last year’s decision by a lower court judge in Texas that ruled the ACA unconstitutional, agreeing with 20 Republican State Attorneys General that argued that the health law was invalid once Congress eliminated the ACA’s individual mandate tax penalty. A coalition of Democratic Attorneys General appealed the District Court ruling, leading to the U.S. Court hearing. TheU.S. Department of Justice, under the Trump Administration, sided with the U.S. District Judge decisiontorepeal the Affordable Care Act.

Easterseals Position: Easterseals does not support efforts to repeal or weaken the Affordable Care Act (ACA), whether in the U.S. courts or through administrative or legislative action. Read our full talking points here.

Please find more information about MomsRising’s Campaign below. Easterseals will support this campaign using MEDICAID STORIES AND SOCIAL POSTS.

Background: On July 9th, oral arguments begin in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in the Republican-led Texas v. United States lawsuit that would overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and threaten protections for the 130 million people living with a pre-existing condition. Join us for a TweetStorm to highlight #WhatsAtStake for America’s families, should the ACA be struck down.

  • What: Share stories on Twitter of people who would be impacted if the ACA is struck down.
  • Hashtags: #TXvUS, #WhatsAtStake
  • Date/Time: July 9th at 2pm ET / 11am PT

What’s a TweetStorm? A TweetStorm is where one or many Twitter accounts share related content in rapid succession with the same hashtag(s). This can help build the visibility of an issue and amplify the discussion in the Twitterverse.

Why? Stories from people who would be directly impacted are the most powerful tool we have to help cut through the political rhetoric and get down to why it’s important to protect the gains we’ve made toward increasing access to quality, affordable health care coverage. During this TweetStorm, we are asking individuals, families, and organizations to share stories from people about:

  • Health care struggles they had before the ACA was implemented;
  • How they have benefited from provisions in the ACA (like the bans on lifetime / annual caps and discrimination for pre-existing conditions, inclusion of the 10 essential health benefits, and children being able to stay on parents’ insurance until age 26); and
  • Their concerns for their health and health care coverage should the ACA be overturned in court.

Tweets: Please share your own content that includes stories and highlights #WhatsAtStake. You can check out Community Catalyst’s TX v US Advocacy Guide for social content and graphics. In addition, here are some sample Tweets and graphics:
